The Sixth Schedule of the Constitution was designed to determine a degree of autonomy to the tribal groups inhabiting the wholly or partially excluded areas (Scheduled Areas) in order to look after their issues relating to definite subjects. As a result, Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) were created for the scheduled areas in Assam union. Similar ADCs were constituted in for Mikir hills (Karbi Anglong), Garo, Khasi and Jaintiya hills district (Meghalaya), North Cachar hills district (Assam) and Lushai hill district (Mizoram). The autonomous districts were further divided into autonomous regions based on the diverse scheduled tribes that inhabited an autonomous district. This is a governance mapping study of the varied structures of governance across the northeast India.
